Why seal a patio or driveway
Cleaning removes the growth, but it doesn't stop it coming back. Black spot and white lichen spots root into unsealed stone, and weeds seed into the joints. Sealing protects the surface so they struggle to take hold.
- Less growth: black spot, lichen and moss find it much harder to get a grip on sealed stone.
- Fewer weeds: on block paving, sealing locks the joint sand in place so weeds can't root in it.
- Cheaper to maintain: a sealed surface is quicker to clean each year, which brings the cost of maintenance down.
How it works
Sealing always follows a full clean, because sealing a dirty surface traps the dirt in. The surface is left to dry fully, block paving is re-sanded, and then the sealer is applied. After that, a yearly maintenance clean keeps it looking like new.

Once your patio or driveway is cleaned and sealed, I can come back each year to clean it and keep the protection topped up. You never have to watch it slowly turn green again.
Questions about patio and driveway sealing
Does sealing make the surface slippery?
A correctly chosen and applied sealer shouldn't make a patio noticeably more slippery. I'll recommend the right type for your surface.
Will sealing change how it looks?
Some sealers leave a natural finish and some slightly enhance or deepen the colour. I'll explain the options for your surface before I start.
Can any surface be sealed?
Most natural stone, sandstone, concrete slabs and block paving can be. Porcelain is already non-porous, so it usually doesn't need sealing.
